Propaganda Art in the 21st Century

ViZ Laboratory for Visual Culture hosts Jonas Staal for a public talk on Art and Propaganda.

In his new book Propaganda Art in the 21st Century (The MIT Press, 2019), artist and propaganda researcher Jonas Staal argues that propaganda is not merely about communication but about reality-construction. Art plays a key role in this process because the process of creating a new reality needs to be imagined, visualized, staged and performed into being. In this lecture, Staal will discuss the role of visual art, theater, film and design in contemporary forms of propaganda, from the War on Terror to the international alt-right. But he will also emphasize that propaganda is not always oppressive in nature, but also has been employed for emancipatory purposes in anti-colonial, socialist, feminist and ecological movements throughout history. Both through his own research and propaganda work, Staal aims to make visible how propaganda art shapes our post-truth era, and how it could shape the world differently.

On Saturday 2 November, Jonas Staal will additionally deliver the Organizational Art Workshop for the students of the Athens School of Fine Arts.

Προπαγανδιστική Τέχνη στον 21ο Αιώνα

Το ViZ Laboratory for Visual Culture φιλοξενεί τον Jonas Staal για μια δημόσια ομιλία με θέμα την τέχνη και τη προπαγάνδα.

Στο νέο του βιβλίο με τίτλο Propaganda Art in the 21st Century (The MIT Press, 2019), ο καλλιτέχνης και ερευνητής της προπαγάνδας Jonas Staal ισχυρίζεται ότι η προπαγάνδα δεν αφορά μονάχα την επικοινωνία αλλά και τη κατασκευή της πραγματικότητας. Η τέχνη παίζει μεγάλο ρόλο σε αυτή τη διαδικασία καθώς η διαδικασία δημιουργίας μιας νέας πραγματικότητας πρέπει να γίνει αντικείμενο της φαντασίας, να οπτικοποιηθεί, να σκηνοθετηθεί – η ύπαρξή της πρέπει να γίνει αντικείμενο επιτέλεσης. Σε αυτή την ομιλία, ο Staal θα πραγματευτεί τον ρόλο των οπτικών τεχνών, του θεάτρου, του φιλμ και του ντιζάιν στις σύγχρονες μορφές προπαγάνδας, από τον Πόλεμο εναντίον του Τρόμου στη διεθνή Εναλλακτική Δεξία. Θα δώσει έμφαση, ωστόσο, στο γεγονός ότι η προπαγάνδα δεν είναι εκ φύσεως καταπιεστική, αλλά έχει χρησιμοποιηθεί και για χειραφετησιακούς σκοπούς σε αντι-αποικιακά, σοσιαλιστικά, φεμινιστικά και οικολογικά κινήματα μέσα στην ιστορία. Τόσο μέσα από την έρευνά του όσο και μέσα από την προπαγανδιστική δουλειά του, ο Staal στοχεύει να καταστήσει ορατό τον τρόπο που η προπαγανδιστική τέχνη διαμορφώνει την εποχή της μετα-αλήθειας, και πως θα μπορούσε να διαμορφώσει τον κόσμο διαφορετικά.

Το Σάββατο 2 Νοεμβρίου, ο Jonas Staal θα παραδώσει το Organizational Art Workshop σε φοιτητές της Ανωτάτης Σχολής Καλών Τεχνών.

About Jonas Staal

Jonas Staal is a visual artist whose work deals with the relation between art, propaganda, and democracy. He is the founder of the artistic and political organization New World Summit (2012–ongoing) and the campaign New Unions (2016–ongoing). With BAK, basis voor actuele kunst, Utrecht, he cofounded the New World Academy (2013–16), and with Florian Malzacher he is currently directing the utopian training camp Training for the Future (2018–ongoing) at the Ruhrtriennale in Germany. Staal’s work has been shown, among others, at the 7th Berlin Biennale, the 31st São Paulo Biennale, the Moderna Museet in Stockholm, and the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam. His exhibition projects include Art of the Stateless State (Moderna Galerija, Ljubljana, 2015), After Europe (State of Concept, Athens, 2016), The Scottish-European Parliament (CCA Glasgow, 2018), and Museum as Parliament (with the Democratic Federation of North Syria, Van Abbemuseum, Eindhoven, 2018-19). His most recent book is Propaganda Art in the 21st Century (MIT Press, 2019).
