Beyond rationalist humanism: The stack and the demonic anima of things

Our present time is full of unusual, even spooky technological phenomena. Diverse weird reactions of Amazon Echo stations are well known examples one could bring up in this context. And as the author James Bridle highlights, various disturbing child-videos are currently appearing in youtube in some kind of technological “limbo”, in which AIs recombine content by analyzing trigger topics and incoming links.

What is striking in this context, is, that we are faced with obviously “irrational” phenomena produced by technological “actors”. We are faced with phenomena resisting the suspected rationality of algorithm-based machines. How could we grasp or even comprehend those “new” digital phenomena? In this public talk, Heiko Schmid will use the concept of the daimon in order to describe these complex technological developments in a historico-cultural context of origin and purpose. Historically, the contact with the “daimones”, the demonic mediators who, according to the ancient perception, intervened in between the worlds of gods and men, was the central theme of the late antique “ars magica”.

But demons have been also explicitly “settled” in digital computer technologies over the past few decades. For example in (Unix) computer language a “demon” represents or personifies a process, which is unparented and hence not controlled by a human being. Computer-demons establish a channel of communication between the senses of man and the “things” or rather the infrastructure that escapes this immediate intuition. Demons hence do fundamentally define the opaque functionalities of the technological network-structure we are embedded in. And, in this “presence”, they start to evoke “magical-mentalities” suppressed in western societies since the rise of modernity. Heiko Schmid will trace the idea of the demon through the history of technology, science and art in order to introduce the demonic as a concept that enables a deeper understanding of contemporary techno-cultural developments.

Πέραν του ορθολογικού ουμανισμού: η στιβάδα και η δαιμονική ψυχή των πραγμάτων

Το παρόν είναι γεμάτο παράξενα, ίσως τρομακτικά, τεχνολογικά φαινόμενα. Οι περίεργες αντιδράσεις των σταθμών της Amazon Echo είναι ένα παράδειγμα που ταιριάζει στη περίσταση. Όπως έχει, επίσης, επισημαίνει ο συγγραφέας James Bridle, διάφορα ενοχλητικά παιδικά videos εμφανίζονται στο youtube εντός μιας κατάστασης τεχνολογικής εκκρεμότητας όπου η τεχνητή νοημοσύνη συνδυάζει περιεχόμενα αναλύοντας trigger topics και εισερχόμενα links.

Αυτό που μας εκπλήσσει εδώ είναι ότι ερχόμαστε αντιμέτωποι με εμφανώς «ανορθολογικά» φαινόμενα που παράγοντα από τεχνολογικούς «φορείς». Αντικρίζουμε φαινόμενα που αντιστέκονται στην υποτιθέμενη ορθολογικότητα των μηχανών αλγοριθμικής ρύθμισης. Πως μπορούμε να συλλάβουμε ή και να κατανοήσουμε αυτά τα «νέα» ψηφιακά φαινόμενα; Ο Heiko Schmid επιθυμεί να χρησιμοποιήσει την έννοια του δαίμονα ώστε να περιγράψει τις πολύπλοκες αυτές τεχνολογικές εξελίξεις, εντός ενός ιστορικού και πολιτισμικού πλαισίου. Ιστορικά, η επαφή με τους «δαίμονες», τους δαιμονικούς διαμεσολαβητές που, κατά την αρχαία αντίληψη, επενέβαιναν ανάμεσα στο κόσμο των θεών και των ανθρώπων, ήταν κεντρικό θέμα της ars magica της ύστερης αρχαιότητας.

Ωστόσο οι δαίμονες κυριαρχούν στις ψηφιακές υπολογιστικές τεχνολογίες των τελευταίων δεκαετιών. Για παράδειγμα, στο λειτουργικό σύστημα Unix, ο δαίμονας αντιπροσωπεύει, ή ενσαρκώνει μια διαδικασία που είναι ακηδεμόνευτη και, ως εκ τούτου, δεν ελέγχεται από ανθρώπινα όντα. Οι υπολογιστικοί δαίμονες καθιερώνουν έναν δίαυλο επικοινωνίας ανάμεσα στις ανθρώπινες αισθήσεις και τα «πράγματα», ή μάλλον μια υποδομή που διαφεύγει της άμεσης διαίσθησης. Οι δαίμονες επομένως καθορίζουν θεμελιακά τις αδιαφανείς λειτουργίες του τεχνολογικού δικτύου-υποδομή εντός του οποίου δρούμε. Όπως προτείνει ο Schmid, με τη «παρουσία» τους ενθυμίζουν «μαγικές νοοτροπίες» που καταπιέστηκαν στις δυτικές κοινωνίες με την άνοδο της νεωτερικότητας. Στην ομιλία του, θα εντοπίσει την ιδέα του δαίμονα εντός της ιστορίας της τεχνολογίας, της επιστήμης και της τέχνης ώστε να προτείνει το δαιμονικό ως έννοια που επιτρέπει μια βαθύτερη κατανόηση των τεχνοπολιτισμικών εξελίξεων.

Dr. Heiko Schmid is an art historian, curator and author. He holds a PhD from the University of Media Arts Cologne, his thesis explores concepts of the future, (digital) machines and the cosmos from an art historian perspective. He just finished a postdoc at the institute of Media Theory and Cultural History at Zeppelin University Friedrichshafen focusing on the topic of “digital thing magic”. Currently he works as a lecturer at the Master Art Education Curatorial Studies at Zurich University of the Arts. He has realized exhibitions, publications and research projects surrounding theories of materiality, concepts of history, technology as well as artistic concepts of the future.
