The challenge of affective infrastructures: networks, practices and technologies of care

The notion ‘affective infrastructures’ is used by Lauren Berlant in order to refer to the necessity of building worlds that accommodate multiplicity and difference. How can this term be understood, though, when taking in mind technology’s continuous mediation? How does it relate to the emerging technologies of empathy and care, to cute robots and personal intelligent assistants? How do contemporary affective infrastructures connect to the neoliberal imperative for self-care and self-optimization? The talk will address these questions while discussing artistic projects and initiatives that use VR or AI as media, and which were presented in the context of transmediale 2019, or in the recent web residencies program ‘Engineering Care’ by Solitude & ZKM. With reference to the possibilities but also the limitations of these technologies, the aim of the talk is to open a discussion on the instrumentalization and commodification of care, and to also highlight the potential for the development of non-sovereign and non-gendered systems and radical affective infrastructures.

Η πρόκληση των συγκινησιακών υποδομών: δίκτυα, πρακτικές και τεχνολογίες φροντίδας

Ο όρος ‘συγκινησιακές υποδομές’ χρησιμοποιείται από τη Lauren Berlant για να τονιστεί η αναγκαιότητα δημιουργίας κόσμων που στηρίζονται στην πολλαπλότητα και τη διαφορετικότητα. Τι σημαίνει, όμως, ο όρος αυτός στο πλαίσιο της σημερινής πραγματικότητας και της συνεχούς διαμεσολάβησης της τεχνολογίας; Ποια η σχέση του με τις επερχόμενες τεχνολογίες ενσυναίσθησης και φροντίδας, με χαριτωμένα ανθρωπόμορφα ρομπότ, και έξυπνους προσωπικούς βοηθούς; Πως συνδέονται οι συγκινησιακές υποδομές με το νεοφιλελεύθερο πρόσταγμα της συνεχούς φροντίδας και της βελτιστοποίησης του εαυτού; Τα ερωτήματα αυτά θα συζητηθούν μέσα από έργα και πρωτοβουλίες καλλιτεχνών που αξιοποιούν τεχνολογίες όπως η εικονική πραγματικότητα και η τεχνητή νοημοσύνη, τα οποία παρουσιάστηκαν στο φεστιβάλ transmediale 2019 και αλλά στο πρόσφατο πρόγραμμα web residencies των Solitude & ZKM με τίτλο ‘Engineering Care’. Με αναφορές στις δυνατότητες αλλά και τους περιορισμούς αυτών των τεχνολογιών, επιδιώκεται μία συζήτηση για την εργαλειοποίηση και εμπορευματοποίηση της φροντίδας, καθώς και για τη δυνατότητα διαμόρφωσης μη ηγεμονικών και έμφυλων συστημάτων και ριζοσπαστικών συγκινησιακών υποδομών.

Daphne Dragona is a curator and writer based in Berlin. Through her work, she engages with artistic practices and methodologies that challenge contemporary forms of power. Among her topics of interest have been: the controversies of connectivity, the promises of the commons, the challenges of artistic subversion, the instrumentalization of play, the problematics of care and empathy, and most recently the potential of kin-making technologies in the time of climate crisis. . Articles of hers have been published in various books, journals, magazines, and exhibition catalogs by the likes of Springer, Sternberg Press, and Leonardo Electronic Almanac. Her exhibitions have been hosted at Onassis Stegi, Laboral, Aksioma, EMST (National Museum of Contemporary Art Athens), Alta Technologia Andina, and Le Lieu Unique. Dragona was part of the core curatorial team of transmediale festival trom 2015 until 2019. She holds a PhD from the Faculty of Communication & Media Studies of the University of Athens.
